WHO
WILL SLAY THE DRAGON SLAYERS?
Come
Friday, 21 June, 2002, the Batch '78 held its first training session
at Endah Parade for the coming Alumni Bowling Tournament in July,
2002. What better thing to do than bowl on a Friday night? The consensus
is that one team winning all three tournaments so far is simply
not healthy for the sport. Among those working towards fulfilling
the aspirations of the people was our one and only Zamri, penghulu
of bowling. Our penghulu of all sorts, Rostam, was there too. Rauf
a.k.a. Rano and his "football" of a bowling ball stood
up to be counted. If you see what looks like a football hurtling
down the lanes, don't worry, it's only Rauf's bowling ball. Our
utility player, Sabri was there too but had to sit out the session
because of an old war wound. And thanks for the memories, Majdi.
Majdi and his cameras. Cameras, cameras and cameras. Should I break
into Streisand's song, the one with Robert Redford? Brave men, those
I mentioned, working towards the aspirations of the people, as I
also mentioned earlier. Of the people, by the people and for the
people. Stop me or next I'll go to my I have a dream speech
.
And,
ladies and gentlemen, after a hiatus of 24 years, our one and only
Roslan Ariffin was also there to bowl with us. Twenty-four years,
that's as long as living next door to Alice. The bowling skills
are there and watch out, for a right-handed guy, his balls curve
to the right. Whoaaa, why doesn't that sound as innocent as it really
is? I'll leave it to you guys to decipher that out. Welcome back
Roslan. For those who can't remember him, just try to remember the
most mischievous little guy in the '78 batch. The you'd know whom
I am talking about.
And
our perennial problem reared up its ugly head again, as it never
fail to do every year. We are suffering a a chronic shortage of
bowlers of the fairer sex for our teams. Where art thou, ladies?
I heard Yati is willing and available. Is it too much to expect
a few more. Go ahead, make my day. Surprise us, really really surprise
us. Fifteen handicap points per game per lady bowler, that's a lot
of handicap points. Wars and fortunes were won and lost on less.
A way out of our predicament, I know some guys who look rather cute
in baju kebaya and tudung. But come to think of it, no one bowls
in a kebaya, songket or otherwise.
If
in the World Cup, minnows upstaged giants, what is preventing us
from doing the same? Just a few more weeks to the tournament, it's
on Sunday, 7 July, 2002. Come that day, who will slay the Dragon
Slayers?
